This site is just a simple attempt to make something interesting out of the Skelhorn Dynasty - at least from the humble beginnings known to us of Grandfather John Skelhorn (1887-1955) and Grand Mother (Grandma) Lily Elizabeth Skelhorn (Nee Elizabeth Jane Preece - 1891-1978)

An attempt will be made to try and link all Skelhorn's who wish to contribute, even if the only known link is in the name or one of its many derivatives - Skelhorn,Skellon, Skellorn, Skellam, Skelhorne etc. No matter what the spelling. A Skelhorn is a Skelhorn and as such there is a place in our own Unique Circle of Superior beings on this isolated place in our Universe.Our story begins as all good stories do with "Once Upon a Time".... in a Land far away LIVERPOOL with two people who met fell in love, had a very large family, then parted soon after the death of baby Norman, who survived only days. And of course the rest is a story we are about to tell.

John Skelhorn - Grandad was the head of 2 Skelhorn families. We belong to this branch, but another "Offshoot" began after they went their seperate ways. Lily Elizabeth Skelhorn (Grandma) was a huge part of most of our early yearswith vague memories of in Gorst Street, Preston and her final resting place, on Savick Estate, Lea, Preston, after the demolishion of the streets around Gorst Street in late 50's or early 1960's. Perhaps more accurate dates will emerge as the pages develope. Gorst Street was home to Grandma and with Gannon's living in the basement and Ken & Jean Skelhorn starting married life in the attic and amongst others. The building was formerly a public house. Whilst memories are of 29 Gorst Street, the front to the old Pub was around the corner known as: Queens Palace, 6 Clayton Street. Preston (referred to as the "Black Hole of Calcutta" by Jean). Sons and daughters known to have passed through 29 Gorst Street were Gwen, Fred, Mabse, Ken and Stanley, with several of our Generation being born while there.

Stephen was the Skelhorn who was born in Dunham Massey (Cheshire) and moved to Liverpool in the 1870's.

April 21 2012 - More added. The 2nd Great-Grandad's - Edwin Preece's immediate familly then several Generations backwards down the Preece lineage.

John Skelhorn. (GRANDAD)

He married Lily Elizabeth (Christened Elizabeth Jane) Preece on January 02, 1911 in West Derby district registry office in Liverpool. They had fourteen children, twelve of whom survived beyond infancy. They moved to 28 Alten Street, off Hey Green Rd., Wavertree around 1923, where the family remained through the late 1940's, although John left Lily about 1932. He left Lily around 1932, eventually divorcing her for another woman (Winnie) whom he never married, although she publicly claimed to be his wife. John had another 2 children, one a daughter. These half brothers/sisters went to the same school as Lily's children and were known to each other but did not know of their relationships.

John is known to have frequented the pubs of Liverpool regularly, arriving home somewhat the worse for wear. John Skelhorn was a member of the R.A.O.B (Picture in the Header), had a very fine baritone voice which he used regularly. Mabse recalls that he would sing in the bathroom and cause passers-by to stop and listen, particularly the local ladies. Fred recalls that he appeared on BBC radio a number of times. He worked for much of his life on the railway.
